The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks entered the competition in 1967 and have faced a rocky road since their inception. Financial hardship and the yearning for a first ever Premiership have been common themes for all associated with the Sharks throughout the majority of the club’s history.
The club suffered their first Grand Final defeat in 1973 and then reached the “big dance” again in 1978, which ended in a draw against Manly and then a subsequent loss in the Grand Final replay the following week. The Sharks’ third Grand Final loss came against Brisbane in 1997 in what was the only Super League grand final ever played.
In 2013, the Sharks became embroiled in an ASADA investigation for the misuse of supplements. This resulted in numerous legal battles and the temporary standing down of coach Shane Flanagan. The club managed to bounce back from the saga, showing resilience against adversity that would usher in a new era for the Sharks. The torturous journey for fans of the club came to an end in 2016 after they secured an elusive first ever Premiership, following a victory over the Storm led by club Captain Paul Gallen. Club legends including the likes of Andrew Ettingshausen, David Peachey and Steve Rogers embraced as their 49 year wait for a taste of Grand Final Victory was over.
Since this breakout victory, the Sharks have been able to transform themselves into consistent finals contenders relying on a mixture of junior development along with a new-found ability to attract players to the club.
