A-League Tips: Match Week 2 Preview

Tagged: A-League Tips

Rivalry resumes in Sydney derby

It only took one week and already controversy is the order of the day in the A-League with the VAR system under the microscope.

With last week's Melbourne derby creating headlines for all the wrong reasons, David Gallop will be praying that it's football that does the talking in the upcoming Sydney derby.

And there's a few other highlight fixtures to focus on this weekend too.

The Mariners will be looking to put in a strong performance at home to prove to fans that they don't need Usain Bolt.

And both the Victory and Glory will be out for their first win of the season down in Melbourne.

Central Coast Mariners v Melbourne City

A-League Odds: Mariners $3.75 / Draw $4 / City $1.83

It's looking increasingly likely that the fastest man of all time will not stay on the Central Coast.

While Mariners fans are split on the issue, they will all be looking to their first home game of the season with optimism.

The signings of former Socceroo Tommy Oar and dynamic Scotsman Ross McCormack both provide much needed experience in the attacking third.

They will link up with the talented Connor Pain, who only took four minutes to find the back of the net in the opening game of the season.

Even though this game against the Roar ended in a draw, there were plenty of positives that coach Mike Mulvey can take from that performance.

He will be looking to his players to stand up and prove that they are an exciting team even without Usain Bolt.

They come up against Melbourne City, who can count themselves fortunate to have got the three points against Victory last week.

Even their own fans would admit that the Bruno Fornaroli penalty wasn't warranted.

Despite this stroke of luck, the signs are also looking good for City.

Instead of splurging on big-name players, the club brought in young Aussie talent in the transfer window.

One of these players was Riley McGree who scored the winning goal last week only three minutes after coming on as a substitute.

But it was Ritchie de Laet who really impressed at his new club.

He was at the heart of everything from right back, creating chances, defending with purpose, and even finding his name on the scoresheet.

Look for another strong performance here.

  • The last 9 encounters between these sides have resulted in either a win or draw for the Melbournians: Melbourne City to win or draw @ $1.22

A-League TipA-League Tip: Match to end in a draw @ $4

Reasoning: This is great value for two teams that looked equally promising in match week 1.

While City have a better squad, the home ground advantage for the Mariners will level the playing field.

Sydney FC v Western Sydney Wanderers

A-League Odds: Sydney FC $1.80 / Draw $3.75 / WSW $4.20

Wanderers fans will be hoping for a result here to spare their continued blushes in this fixture.

While the Sydney derby is always a heated and passionate affair, Sydney FC's recent dominance has meant that some of the excitement has been lost.

But in this post-Graham Arnold era, perhaps this is Western Sydney's best chance to have a spell of derby dominance of their own.

Sydney FC looked far from convincing in their first A-League game under Steve Corica last week, drawing with Adelaide.

The Sky Blues seemed to lack their usual sharpness on the ball and threat in front of goal.

This can only be expected after not only Arnold's departure, but that of Bobo and Adrian Mierzejewski, who were central figures in Sydney's attack last campaign.

While these men have been adequately replaced, don't expect the Sky Blues to click for a few weeks yet.

The Wanderers have also seen some major squad changes, and similarly looked far from a finished article in last week's draw to Perth.

Western Sydney local Tarek Elrich looked the goods at his new club, playing a significant role from left back.

He provided the assist for Roly Bonevacia's goal, in what could quickly become a very dangerous partnership.

But it was the Wanderers' defence that struggled, and they were lucky not to concede more than one goal.

They will need to improve to get a result at the SCG on Saturday night.

  • The last 3 Sydney derbies have been won by the Sky Blues by a margin of 2+ goals: Sydney FC to win by 2+ goals @ $3

A-League TipA-League Tip: Both teams to score @ $1.70

Reasoning: In the first round of the competition, all teams found the back of the net, which probably says more about the quality of defending than attacking prowess.

But both these teams have weapons in attack, so expect both to score a goal at some stage.

Melbourne Victory v Perth Glory

A-League Odds: Victory $1.80 / Draw $3.75 / Glory $4.20

The feature fixture of Sunday sees Perth make the long trip east to take on the Victory.

Two teams expected to make the finals this season, both can consider themselves unlucky not to get more out of their opening round matches.

Perth should've put the Wanderers away long before they found their equalizer, while Melbourne can rightfully feel robbed by the much discussed VAR decision.

A positive sign for both the Victory and the league was Keisuke Honda's debut.

Despite lacking the pace of years past, his superior technical ability was on show, especially when he made a smart run into the box and guided his header into the bottom corner.

Melbourne will have to cope without other big-name signing Ola Toivenen, who is side-lined with a calf injury.

Perth meanwhile are hopeful of finally ending their chronic underachievement which has plagued them since the inception of the A-League.

This new found belief in the club is largely thanks to one man: Tony Popovic.

The master coach will surely add grunt and solidity to the Glory's backline, which has been their downfall in recent years.

But as last week's game showed, this won't be at the expense of the attack.

The Glory created plenty in front of goal, with only their finishing letting them down.

An improvement would give them a huge chance here.

A-League StatKey A-League Stat: Both teams scored in their opening round fixtures: both teams to score @ $1.55

A-League TipA-League Tip: No bet.

Reasoning: Any result wouldn't surprise here. There are too many factors to bet with any real confidence.
