About

WIN Stadium, formerly known as Wollongong Showground, is one of two home bases for the St George Illawarra Dragons. Located within spitting distance of the Pacific Ocean, the ground has one of the most unique views in Australian sports.

Opening all the way back in 1911, the ground would first play host to the Illawarra Steelers when they entered the competition in 1982. At this time the stadium was an oval with a greyhound track running around the outside. 1988 would see the ground converted into a rectangle which would be custom built for rugby league. After erecting a grandstand at the southern end, it would remain the home of the Steelers until the 1998 season when the Steelers would merge with the St George Dragons.

While the ground has also hosted two Rugby League world cup games, and an international test between Fiji and France, there is argument in the community for the stadium to be demolished. Some argue that the Illawarra community would be better served by a newer stadium with better facilities in a different location, which would not only draw more people, but bigger games to the ground.

Holding a capacity of 23,000 people, the Dragons play 5 home games at WIN Stadium a season. However, with underwhelming crowd attendance in the past few years, there is a push to move more games to UOW Jubilee Oval in Kogarah.
