About Brad Fittler

Bradley Fittler is an Australian Rugby League legend. Bursting onto the scene as teenager for the Penrith Panthers, Fittler then moved to the Sydney Roosters where he would become captain and play over 200 games for the club. One of the more unique voices in the game, Fittler is now the coach of the New South Wales Blues, as well as a key member of channel nine’s commentary team.

There is no doubt that Fittler was one the finest footballers of his era, carving out a dynasty for club, state and country. Known as ‘Freddy’, Fittler debuted for the Panthers whilst he was still in high school, and quickly gained a reputation as one of the best juniors the game has produced. His trademark side-step made him one of the most feared attacking players in the game. A versatile player who could play centre, five-eighth and eventually lock forward, Fittler would be selected for a Kangaroo tour after only two seasons, going on to play 38 tests for Australia.

In 1996, Fittler would join the Sydney Roosters, where he was immediately installed as captain—a testament to his leadership qualities. Freddy would lead the Roosters to a Grand Final Victory in 2002, before retiring in 2004. His identification with the club was strengthened when he coached the Chooks from 2007-2009.

Fittler is also considered one of New South Wales’ greatest State of Origin players, being the most capped player with 31 matches, as well as the youngest player to debut for the Blues. His Origin legacy will grow in 2018 as he becomes the new coach for New South Wales, a difficult task which naturally fell to Fittler, given his passion, experience and football wisdom.

Brad Fittler’s standing in the game has continued to blossom after a successful transition to the media since retirement. He is regarded as one of the more unorthodox thinkers in Rugby League, always providing entertainment and insight, and a joy to listen to for fans of the game.
