About Peter Sterling

Peter Sterling is a former champion halfback who made his name playing for the Parramatta Eels, New South Wales and Australia. Now one of the most recognisable commentators on both television and radio, Sterlo is one of the defining voices of Australian rugby league.

Peter Sterling was touted as a special player from a very young age. Taking up a scholarship to attend well known Rugby League school Fairfield Patrician Brothers in 1978, Sterling would go on to play a pivotal role in the four Premiership wins for Paramatta through the 1980’s, establishing himself as one of the best players in the game. Sterling also managed to capture the number 7 jersey for both New South Wales, playing 13 origins, and for Australia, earning 18 test caps.

Sterling was a brilliant player with an excellent kicking and passing game, along with a tenacious attitude in defence and a great tactician of the game. He was seen to have every Rugby League skill covered. His talent would allow him to become a Golden Boot winner as the best player in the world in 1987, and a two-time Dally M medallist in 1986 and 1987. These feats couldn’t be overlooked in 2008, when Sterling was named among the 100 best players to play the game.

Since his retirement in 1992, Sterling has been a prominent figure in the Rugby League media, in a post-playing transition that has appeared seemingly effortless. Sterling’s head is now one of the most recognisable on Australian TV. He was one of the original hosts of Channel 9’s Thursday night footy show alongside Paul Vautin. The pair would also head Channel 9’s commentary of the game alongside Ray Warren. Sterling’s commentary and insight ranks as one of the most widely respected today, with former New South Wales Origin coach Laurie Daley franking this opinion by bringing Sterling on board as an advisor.
