Gold Coast Titans

About Gold Coast Titans

The Titans arrived on the Gold Coast in 2007 as the fourth Rugby League brand to try their hand as a club on the glamour strip. They played their first premiership game at Suncorp Stadium against the Dragons where a crowd of 42,000 witnessed the debut of the new club and marquee signings Scott Prince, Preston Campbell and Luke Bailey. Despite losing the match, many Rugby League fans liked what they saw from the Gold Coast outfit.

The Titans made their first finals appearance in 2009, where they were knocked out would be Grand finalists Parramatta in the second week. They would make it one step further the next year, falling one game short of the 2010 Grand Final.

The club had a fall from grace in 2011 however as a string of poor performances led to the Titans collecting a first ever wooden spoon. The following years was then characterised by significant player turnover, financial dramas and players being involved with off-field incidents.

In 2015, star halfback Daly Cherry-Evans announced that he would join the club on a large contract for the following season, however mid-way through the 2015 season Cherry-Evans backflipped on his deal and re-signed with Manly. In 2017 the Titans had arguably their biggest signing coup when it was announced they had secured the services of Jarryd Hayne on a one-year contact. Hayne was returning to the NRL following a stint in the NFL and Rugby Sevens. Unfortunately for Titans fans however, Hayne was unable to recapture the form that made him one of the most dangerous outside backs in the game before his code switch. His poor form coupled with an alleged fall-out with then coach Neil Henry led to Hayne opting not to extend his contract and instead return to Sydney to rejoin the Parramatta Eels.

The Titans have only made the finals on one occasion since 2010, however with their supporter base continuing to grow, the faith has remained on the Gold Coast that their fortunes will turn around.
