Queen of Turf honours to be decided
Fillies and Mares will clash over the Randwick mile in what shapes as a great test of speed and stamina. A few of these were on a stayers prep and have arrived here with the view that they are better suited over a shorter trip, whilst we also see a number of runners stretching up to the mile following runs over less ground. This all makes for an intriguing battle where the tempo will play a big role.
Race Track Traits
Randwick is currently rated a Good 4 with the rail out 3m the entire circuit and fine conditions predicted for the day. The racing surface looked to be playing fairly on day 1 of The Championships last Saturday, with runners coming from both on and off speed to win and from most lanes across the track. Suspect we can default to a fair surface again for Day 2 this week, with similar conditions expected.
Good push here in early markets for Silent Sedition who is $11 into $6.50. Slight drifts for Foxplay $8.00 out to $11.00, Daysee Doom out to $8.50 from $7 and Eckstein $15 out to $20. There's also been a spec at longer odds for Payroll $34 into $21.
#1 Daysee Doom $7 > $8.50
Ron Quinton has this girl going great guns this prep, including a first-up Group 2 win and following that, victory in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic. Has never won over a mile and will have to carry plenty of weight (57kg). Suspect if she was going to get the trip, it would not be over the Randwick Mile which is a harder test than most. Wide draw a big concern and happy to risk.
#2 Foxplay $8 > $11
On her day would simply brain them, however she is far from her best this prep. Finished 4 of 7 last start in the Emancipation over 1500m where she was only half a length from the winner. Draws nicely in gate 9 and can find a premier position from there, one off the fence midfield. She would ideally love to be close to speed sprinting off a slow tempo and may get that here. Leading hope.
#3 Dixie Blossoms $5.50
Has a cult following and will need plenty of speed to run on. Corey Brown will immediately snag her back to near last and be hoping they go warp speed up front. She will be running on hard but suspect some will have her measure.
#4 Prompt Response $8.50
Owned by a prominent Queensland Racing board member who has had a fair share of success recently. Gai loves this girl to race on speed and on Saturday they have the draw to do that when jumping from gate 7. There could be a distinct lack off speed in the race and if that is the case, expect her to simply run away from them all.
#5 Silent Sedition $11 > $6.50
Quality mare who is as tough as teak. They have been building her up nicely for this following a solid run in the Coolmore over 1500m and a nice win over 1200m the start prior. Can see her landing in the box seat here, one out and one back, where she can peel out and attack the line hard. Top chance.
#17 Alizee $11
Is the lone 3yo who will receive the associated weight relief and only has to carry 54.5kg. She has to take on some quality older mares in this and it would appear a bridge too far. Interesting move from Godolphin to bring her sharply back in distance from the 2000m last start where she didn’t stay. Big roll of the dice and not for me.
Of The Others….
Oregon’s Day has to go on top here at the price, following two excellent Sydney runs where two back she just missed in the Group 1 Coolmore when running second. Cannot believe they are currently betting $14 and suspect she will shorten right up on the day. It could be a big day for Mick Price and she's the one to beat.
1st Oregon's Day
2nd Silent Sedition
3rd Prompt Response
4th Dixie Blossoms
