Golden Rose Stakes

Distance 1400m
Grade Group One
Track Rosehill
Prizemoney $1,000,000
Class 3YO's, Set Weights
2017 winner Trapeze Artist ($41)

The Golden Rose Stakes is the feature race for three-year-olds held during the Sydney Spring carnival. It is a Group One race and in recent years has served as a yardstick in revealing the best young horse in the land.

Run over 1,400 metres at Rosehill Racecourse, the Golden Rose is in many ways the spring-time equivalent of the Golden Slipper, with the winner destined for a lucrative career. Since 2017, the prize purse for the three-year-old set weights race has sat at one million dollars, making it an appealing race to win for connections in the short as well as long term.

The distance of 1,400 metres means that to win, the horse needs to have plenty of speed, but also that extra bit of fitness that will mean the difference in the final furlong.

Unless they have extraordinary talent for their age, horses caught three wide the trip can just about wave their chances of having their photo taken goodbye.

First run in 1978 as the Peter Pan Stakes, the race was renamed in 2003 to its current moniker. That year, the race's prize money increased, despite having its grade curiously dropped from Group Two to an unlisted race. However, the race was upgraded all the way to Group One in 2009, where it has remained since.

Some very high profile horses have won the race in recent times. 2015 saw the giant of horse Exosphere frank his favouritism, with trainer John O'Shea and jockey James McDonald combining again in 2016 to get race favourite Astern over the line.

2017 Golden Rose Stakes

Trapeze Artist's run in 2017 was arguably the most impressive of Golden Rose Stakes victories.

Unfancied in the betting and jumping at $41, Trapeze Artist sat off the back of a hot speed before storming home, going on to win by a race record margin of almost five lengths. You can watch Trapeze Artist's commanding victory below.
