Caulfield Guineas

Distance 1600m
Grade Group 1
Track  Caulfield
Prizemoney $2,000,000
Class Set Weights for Three-year-olds
2017 winner

Mighty Boss ($101)

The Caulfield Guineas is a set-weights race for three-year olds, run over 1,600 metres at Caulfield Racecourse. With a prize purse of two million dollars, it is one of the most lucrative races to win during the spring carnival.

The Caulfield Guineas has fostered a reputation of being a stallion-maker race. In other words, male horses that have not only won but run well in this race have become champion sires in their post-racing careers. Lonhro and Redoute's Choice both triumphed in the Guineas, and they have gone on to become two of Australia's most famous sires, with their progeny having successful racing careers to this day.

First run back in 1881, the Caulfield Guineas has always been run over the distance of a mile. This is part of what makes the Guineas such a great race. Three-year-olds that can step up in distance and win at 1,600 metres earmarks the horse as a quality animal, and why so many Caulfield Guineas winners are sent to stud.

Run on the second Saturday in October, the Caulfield Guineas is part of one of the best days on the Australian racing calendar. Three other Group Ones, including the Thousand Guineas- the Caulfield Guineas equivalent for fillies- is also run at the meet. And in recent years, this day has become even better with the introduction of the Everest up in Sydney.

What's more is that Caulfield Guineas day marks the start of four weeks of the highest calibre of racing. The Guineas is followed by the Caulfield Cup a week later, then the Cox Plate, and the Flemington carnival.

2017 Caulfield Guineas

While horses in single-figure odds have tended to dominate the race in previous years, 2017 saw a massive boilover, with the hundred-to-one shot Mighty Boss taking the victory. Mighty Boss had the run of the race with Michael Walker on board, finishing ahead the well-fancied placegetters Kementari and Catchy.
