The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a the premier sprint race for three-year-olds during the spring carnival. Since 2006, it has been held on Victoria Derby Day, and is arguably only pipped by the Derby itself as the best and highest quality race on the day.
Not only does the Coolmore Stud stakes provide an indication of the best young horses going around, but it is a terrific betting race. This is because the race usually contains a mix of genuine sprinters, as well fillies and colts who typically run over a longer distance. It is not uncommon to see these horses flying home in the last hundred metres, looking to put their head first past the post.
Because of all the different form lines coming in, it's a challenge to pick the winner. This has been reflected in the previous three editions of the race, where horses in double figure odds have got the chocolates.
The 1,200 metres up the Flemington straight is unique in Australian racing, as it features no turns. Just a long, straight run that often sees the anomaly of the field of horses splitting, half going to towards the running rail, and the other half coming to the grandstand side. Therefore, the Coolmore Stud Stakes is a race where tactics from the jockeys play a more central role.
The final fifty metres of last year's Coolmore was perhaps the most thrilling yet. Invincible Star looked to have the victory locked away before Merchant Navy came flying up the inside and Formality was steadily eating up the metres on the outside.
As the three horses hit the line, it was the inside that got up. Merchant Navy has gone on to have a cracker year, winning at both The Curragh and Ascot.
