About

In AFL-mad Melbourne with its bevy of oval-shaped grounds, AAMI Park is the premier rectangular stadium in the nation’s second largest city. The 30,000-seat stadium was developed in 2010 to provide Melbourne with a state of the art rectangular stadium suitable to rugby codes and soccer, of which the city lacked beforehand.

The aptly named Melbourne Rectangular Stadium would become the new home ground of the Melbourne Storm after moving from Olympic park next door. Now largely referred to by its sponsor name AAMI Park, the modern stadium is one of the best grounds in the country to watch rugby or soccer. This is highlighted by attendance numbers, as the Storm now boast one of the biggest average crowds in the NRL. This can be put down to not only the Storm’s quality on the park, but also the quality of the stadium itself, as well as ease of access, giving fans a pleasant viewing experience from any seat in the stadium, and limited stress to get to kick-off on time.

AAMI Park is situated in Melbourne’s major sporting precinct which includes the MCG and Rod Laver Arena. The stadium can more or less be identified by the interesting looking bubble-like exterior. On the 7th May 2010, the stadium held it first event, a Rugby League Test match between Australia and New Zealand. The Storm would then play their first home ground at the new stadium two nights later against the Brisbane Broncos.

Since these recent beginnings, the Storm have gone onto greater heights in their new home. Boasting one of the most formidable home records in the past five years, the Storm will doubtless continue to triumph over visiting teams for years to come.
