SATURDAY RACING REVIEW

Racing was at CAULFIELD on Saturday, with rail out 8m. The track went from a GOOD 4 to GOOD-3 (Race 6), then the rain came and it was downgraded to a SOFT 5. Again, most riders avoided being hard on that inside rail. Not convinced there was much in it, pattern-wise. It was a better day to be nearer the speed.

In Sydney it was RANDWICK on GOOD 4 track (an actual Good-4 track too !!) and I thought the track played very well. Most avoided being hard on the inside lanes, the horses that raced in that section were really ‘’forced’’ to be there (read: no real other options) but the few that did race down there, ran pretty close to market expectations so…?

Run Of The Day

Thanks to all who voted, well over 1,000 votes were recorded and you went with KOLDING and he secured 47% of the vote. STILL A STAR had 20% with CAPTIVANT (16%) and YONKERS (17%) rounding out the poll.

Kolding

Randwick Racing Review

Race 6 was the Group 1 Champagne Stakes for 2YO's and CAPTIVANT had the perfect run off a strong speed, inside before edging off rail and getting a great run through then just holding off HILAL who settled behind him then edged wider before the turn (just as winner secured that run through) then ran home strongly to just miss.

He covered more ground than the winner which may well have been the difference but was worth noting both horses recorded an identical last 200m figure of 11.80. Hilal was quicker 400m-to-200m (rankled 2nd / winner ranked 6th for that section) and they went by CONVERGE who had the gun trail himself, he ran well, but was no match for the quinella, his 12.36 last 200m (rank 9th) backs-up what you saw visually.

I’VE BEAN THERE settled near the winner but was held-up turning then cut back inside rail (was it the very best going?) and closed off 12-flat. Port Louis was sensationally backed from huge odds midweek to jump $5 third-fave.

He ended up last and then was slightly baulked trying to edge wider 300m out, he recorded race-fastest 400m-to-200m split then ran 11.92 (rank 3rd) last 200m where said quinoa held him. Safe to say, even though he was unplaced, the ‘’money was right’’ and he ran very well. I mentioned the strong speed, well they went +5.5L Vs G1/2YO Average early then steadied before upping the tempo again 800m out. It was a proper test of endurance for young athletes no doubt. Time: 1-34.3 was +2L Vs G1/2yo average and race has rated hurly.

The other Group 1 was the All Aged Stakes (Race 7) at 1400m. KOLDING had the rails trail settling inside eventual runner-up SAVATIANO. DREAMFORCE led them and ran slick 46.78 1st-800m off standing start. Winner had dream run and split off leaders back whilst SAVATIANO honked out. Again you could argue strongly that covering a little extra ground here was the difference in  a game of millimetres. Have to say though, KOLDING’s will to win and fight was terrific.

CASCADIAN beats them both if he gets clear running earlier, he really only edged off their heels 75m from the line, then rushed home! It was some training effort, 1600m-to-1400m from Hcp to WFA. PRAGUE drifted back 2nd-last with cover, he spotted them 6L straightening then ran home hard to get within 1L. His 33.08 / 11.38 splits home were terrific.

MASKED CRUSADER settled behind him, last, and a clear last. Surely they needed a better plan than that ! He actually jumped well but they over-played it giving him an impossible task. He ran 32.84 last 600m which is 6.7L above the G1 average for this distance range then ran 11.40 home last 200m but couldn’t reel them in. Noting his last 200m was 3rd-fastest in race (but only 2/100ths off that of Prague) and he had sustained a couple of very big 200m sectionals to get to the 200m, however, do think he would be risk beyond 1400m.

FIFTY STARS has to be noted here also, back inside PRAGUE he saved ground (but was off rail) before running 6th-fastest 400m-to-200m, then, ran 11.29 home (race-fastest) and did power through the line. DREAMFORCE held 8th and TAGALOA 9th. There was 1.8L over all of these horses. Time was very fast (fast day) with 1-20.9 the overall.
Savatiano

Race 5 saw SPLINTEX land some very good bets winning G3 Hall Mark (SWP). Did see TAB went up $12 first markets for him and many punters pounced! He sat up second on 34.66 1st-600m (-4.5L Vs class ave) then took over before holding off a wall chasing him. There was only 1.7L over first six in this race, winner runs 1200m but only just and that was evident again here.

RANIER had good run between them and ran home 11.40 to get second. Only OUTBACK BARBIE had a quicker last 200m (11.26 - which was the day’s fastest too) and she ran 32.82 last 600m (+12L Vs all averages) so watch for her heading to Qld. VICTOREM split them running on nicely for third (home 11.40) with 59kg.

SIGNORE FOX railed (best ground?) and was close-up 5th. EASY EDDIE led (led the winner) and faded but yeah, not badly, he was that 6th horse and 1.7L off the winner. ELEVEN ELEVEN looked false favourite early doors for mine but he did cover ground and battled OK for right race. Time was slick, 1-8.48.

Race 9 was also over 1200m so let’s line this very promising winner LOST AND RUNNING up against the Group 3 Hall Mark Stks. He led and went 34.79 1st-600m so only .13 slower than that Group 3 before slipping away and bolting in with rider very kind on him late! He ran 1-8.75 (with 58.5kg) and ran 33.48/ 11.40 home. Put it this way, had they run him in the Hall Mark with weight advantage, he probably wins it but then again, we have the age-old question of pressure!

Could he have absorbed Easy Eddie and Splintex berthing down his neck and still had that same kick? In my humble, the ability to absorb the pressure separates many great athletes from average ones. Anyway, he was brilliant and is a future Group winner surely!? FLAT HEAVEN steamed home from the back at cricket-score odds (not Australian cricket these days, more one of those minnow countries) to add plenty of spice for those playing quinellas. MORE PROPHETS wa back with him, went inside, and ran home very well (11.39 - race-fastest) in, maybe, slightly inferior ground? SEGALAS was a sound 4th, and 4th-best run in it.

Back to Race 8 and BM100 at 1400m. CUBA led ARCHEDEMUS and they went 46.78 1st-800m which was identical to that of the G1 All Aged at same trip. These two faded. Winner ROCHA CLOCK sat back with cover on back of ROYAL CELEBRATION and with softer run, and 53kgs was able to wear him down. ROYAL CELEBRATION was another who went up massive odds early markets, swap the runs and he wins, he does look a coming winner!

NUDGE split them (ran 2nd) and started favourite after finally drawing a gate, alas, it worked against her when she was forced to inside rail and lost momentum just as others were making their runs, when more room came, she was strong. LAURE ME IN has flashed home here running an 11.32 last 200m, that figure was bettered only by PHAISTOS (11.31) who came from tail, widest, and was very good himself. Time: 1-21.82 so the G1 horses had around 5L on these BM100 horses but… that’s about what you would expect !

Race 2 JB Carr Stakes for 3YOF was also over 1400m. ALL HALLOWS’ EVE relished the 1400m (she was simply strongest that last 100m) after being given a perfect J.Kah ride from 3rd-last off a solid enough tempo and doing clear. ELIZABEEL set that tempo running 47.56 1st-800m (a slick figure but not overly fast this day) and gave a kick before being collared late.

I SAY HELLO had rails trail, didn’t quicken and looked in strife before picking-up and finding the line inside, gets 3rd. NICCI’S FLING was an every chance 4th. GEIST (ran home 3rd-fastest) and KIKU (made forgive file) rounded out first six and 1.6L only covered them. Time: 1-21.85 so, they have run just 3/100ths slower than quality older horses here despite around a 4L slower 1st-800m.

Better mention SENOR TOBA who won Frank Packer Plate (Race 3) at 2000m and he did it jumping in trip (and getting back onto dry!!) coming from last when left at the tail 800m out as others made moves. He built speed very well, secured run off runner-up HIGH SUPREMACY and inside LION’S ROAR and was simply too strong.

He was race-fastest his final 2 x 200m splits and his 11.56 home was .32 faster than second-ranked (runner-up HIGH SUPREMACY. ACHIEVER led +3.9L Vs class and gave a kick, he held third from LION’S ROAR who finished off 11.96, he was OK but certainly well below the level of previous few runs… Back in trip? End of prep..??? Time: 2-01.41 was +3.5L Vs class and race rated quite well against the other 2000m race won by quality older horse PATHS OF GLORY.

David Gately Tip Review - Randwick 20/04/2021

SATURDAY RACING REVIEW

Racing was at CAULFIELD on Saturday on a track that went from GOOD 4 to GOOD 3. The rail was TRUE. The inside 6m was ‘’protected ground’’ however, the inside rail did appear to be inferior ground and was avoided by most as the day wore on. So Si Bon did lead/ win on rail. In saying all that, it was certainly no swoopers track. Despite some strongly-run races the trifecta in most of the nine races conducted had settled on-speed or within a few lengths of the leader. It was a ‘’fast day’’ though, especially in chute (sprint) races with 8 of the 9 races won way above averages. In short: It was a tough day to swoop, but ideally you did not want to be hard on inside rail either.

Racing in Sydney was at RANDWICK for Day 2 of The Championships. The track was posted as GOOD-4, however, from very early on it appeared the track was somewhere between a SOFT 5-6. The inside lanes chopped out significantly and drastically as the day wore on. By Race 9 and 10 the runners were a long, long way off that inside section. I do wonder if, in my lifetime, punters will ever be treated as the lifeblood of this sport, which they are !!??

Run Of The Day

Thanks to all who voted. ADDEYBB won the popular vote with 45% from Caulfield 2YO winner FINANCE TYCOON (27%). NETTOYER (17%) and WILD RULER (11%) rounded out the poll.

Addeybb

Randwick Racing Review

The Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes was Race 8 and ADDEYBB went back-to-back ! Whilst he didn't have the dominance over the field that he enjoyed last year, he was as strong as anything on the line. It was an interesting rendition of this race given the modest tempo (by G1 standards / -4.2L early Vs G1 average), given the shuffling around of positions, and there was just 2.6L over all seven runners.

When ADDEYBB won this race in 2020 he won it by 2.8L. Said winner was not flash away but worked up second 1200m out (with aforementioned modest tempo) and then was able too control things, ramping-up from before the turn and well, kept running! Runner-up VERRY ELLEEGANT had rails trail early but way too keen (even for her) off that tempo, she was then shuffled back before making move wide (best ground) 600m out, she loomed to win, a neck off the winner but couldn’t finish off, she held second despite running 11.84 last 200m, the slowest of any runner in the race.

In fact, there was just .10 seconds between all seven runners that last 200m, Even 3YO MO’UNGA who was ridden upside/ down so… No real idea what to make of the race, except to say it is tough to decry the winner! DALASAN led and was close-up 3rd (.7) and very brave. THINK IT OVER is flying this prep, his 11.74 was actually race-fastest (narrowly). Time: 2-05.05 off 1-30.17 1st-1400m. Overall time was -2.7L Vs G1 average.

Race 9 was the Queen Of Turf Stakes and giant killer NETTOYER was back to spoil the party, she was slow out (but not as slow as she normally is) and ended up in a great spot off midfield outside in best ground off good speed. Leader GREYSFUL GLAMOUR ran +1.5L Vs G1 ave early and 60.75 1st-1000m.

The fave PROBABEEL had perfect 1-1 trail and peeled 3-wide well before turn (better ground/ it was a confident ride) and shot clear but was nailed late. She had near 2L up her sleeve on third mare QUANTUM MECHANIC (had gun run following Probabeel) with COLETTE doing her best work late after settling inside the winner.

She just couldnt quicken like Nettoyer and was left behind (by some 4L) before picking-up and running 11.58 home (2/100ths faster than winner - and ran her back to 2.3L). ALL SAINTS EVE was actually race-fastest home from way back (11.57) and is flying tis prep but will always find this elite/ G1 level a bit much for her. Time: 1-35.86 was +1.7L Vs G1 F&M Ave for 1600m.

Race 10 was Sapphire Stakes and FASIKA sat up second on leader ADELONG and they ran 35.29 1st-600m (steering well off inside), this tempo had them -1.3L Vs G2 F&M average. FASIKA then took over and just held off Kiwi ENTRIVIERE who had sat off them, 4-deep no cover before surging late. WANDABAA was able to settle closer (just off-pace between runners) and she kept closing to get third despite only managing 7th-fastest last 200m.

Winner was 8th-fastest. Runner-up ranked 4th (11.68). SWEET DEAL ridden colder ran home nicely after working off runner-ups heels 200m out, she ran 11.53 home. FIETSA was good for easier in 5th. AIR TO AIR ran 11.51 home and race-fastest in very good run for something easier. Time: 1-9.88 was +1L Vs class ave.

Race 4 was Percy Sykes for 2YOF and winner JAMAEA came form back, weaved through tight gap and grabbed CRYSTAL BOUND (sat up second) late. Winner ran 1-10.92 off 35.67 1st-600m (bang on class ave early - Overall time -1L Vs class). JOYOUS LEGEND sat back outside winner but was pulling, she too had good run through and ran home strongly with 11.82 last 200m (winner ran 11.68). A VERY FINE RED led/ was collared 200m out but fought hard despite racing way too close to that inside rail. YEARNING was 5th beaten 1.1L and should have finished closer. It was a very busy finish and race rated only fairly.

Race 5 was the Group 1 ATC Oaks and HUNGRY HEART proved too strong again! This race was run completely differently to that fearsome speed set by HARMONY ROSE in the Vinery and winner had perfect spot 6th 2-wide and was able to make a (winning) move 600m out before hitting front and was as strong as anything to the line. So, yeah, the Vinery was run at a brutal speed as referenced, this race, was not! Same girl led (HARMONY ROSE) but went -7.8L Vs G1 average before fading. DUAIS and BARGAIN came through Adrian Knox Stks and clearly that form measured up as they ran 2nd, 3rd.

Hungry Heart

DUAIS did a terrific job from way back, inside off slow speed, she made move and quickly edged off rail and ended up on back of the winner (great ride) but couldn’t reel her in despite running race-fastest for final 2 x 200m splits. BARGAIN had rails trail this time, she did secure run off tiring leader’s back but winner then sailed by, she battled very well though. AMARELINHA was where the big money landed but she couldn’t get by HARMONY ROSE after finding her back. MONTEFILAI ridden colder did run home well and yes tempo was no help but, her 12.04 home was 5th-fastest in race so happy to conclude, others were better! Time: 2-33.58 was -4.7L Vs G1 3yoF Ave.

Race 6 was Arrowfield Sprint and WILD RULER sat 3-wide outside a 35.31 1st-600m (-1.5L Vs class) before getting away and holding off ISOTOPE stopping the clock at 1-10.12 (-1.7L Vs class). Tough taking anything away from the winner given wide run but we do have to factor in A) the modest tempo and B) the fence was off by now. ISOTOPE raced tight at a vital stage and only saw more daylight once the winner had kicked, she rushed home in 11.41 to just miss, that last 200m split was 2nd-fastest all day and bettered only by 1/100ths of a second, by, third-horse here PRAGUE who really closed off nicely, it is likely safe to conclude, had he not missed the kick, he runs over them? These three had .3L separating them on the line and they had 2.1L on fourth horse AMISH BOY (ran well but trifecta were all better). ROCKETING BY was an honest 5th after following winner wide (with trail).

The Sydney Cup was R7 and a proper test of endurance over 3200m. The early speed was +8.2L Vs class ave and runs did come early, none sooner than winner SELINO who went forward wide (best going) 700m out and kept running all way to the line and held RONDINELLA by 1.3L. That was the extra margin she had on third-horse MIAMI BOUND who has closed off well from back in best going. The mares SHE’S IDEEL and REALM OF FLOWERS were shuffled back when runs came and both ended up on or near the inside rail, Realm Of Flowers was amazingly still (clear !!) race-fastest home running 11.94 in that quicksand… Sigh !! Time: 2-32.13 was +5.4L Vs ave.

THE FORGIVE FILE:

  • HOLYFIELD (wide)
  • GEMMAHRA (respiratory issue)
  • PRINCE AURELIUS (slow recovery)
  • ELECTRIC GIRL (little luck)
  • NAJMATY (slow recovery)
  • HARMONY ROSE (slow recovery)
  • PRAGUE (start costly)
  • DAME GISELLE (stayed on rail/ bad move)
  • SHE’S IDEEL (shuffled back/ worst ground)
  • REALM OF FLOWERS (same story)
  • HUSH WRITER (covered ground)
  • CHAPADA (upside/ down)
  • MO’UNGA (upside/ down ?)
  • VANGELIC (should have finished closer)
  • MISSYBEEL (railed/ bad move)
  • ODEUM (blew start badly)
  • SEASONS (too close inside).

David Gately Tip Review - Randwick 13/04/2021

SATURDAY RACING REVIEW

Racing was at RANDWICK on Saturday for Day 1 of The Championships. Track went from SOFT-7 to SOFT-6 with rail TRUE and the track played well although most avoided being hard on that inside rail from very early on. You could lead (if you left the inside rail) and you could certainly swoop, wide if good enough and if tempo was there.

Racing was at CAULFIELD in Melbourne and track went from GOOD-4 to SOFT-5 with rain falling during the meeting. The horses encountered a strong headwind in the straight and through the first half of the card it seemed advantageous to be swooping (after gaining cover) then 3 of the last 4 winners led or sat up second, they did all edge away from the inside rail in the straight though. Concluding no mad track bias however, off inside rail was the go, especially for chute (sprint) races.

Run Of The Day

The focus of this week’s poll was the four Group 1 races at Randwick, near 1100 votes were tallied and 48% of those votes went to ANAMOE.

Old mate NATURE STRIP had 30% with CASCADIAN 15% and EXPLOSIVE JACK just 7%.
Nature Strip

Randwick Racing Review

The Group 1 Sires Produce was Race 6 and ANAMOE was totally dominant. He simply exploded after sitting just off midfield in a strongly-run 2YO 1400m race (First section +1.7l Vs G1 average and +4.1L Vs all averages). Leader TIGER OF MALAY went 48.19 1st-800m and the trifecta all came from the back. Winner was eased down 60-70m from home (a long way out !!) and still had 2.8L up his sleeve on HILAL who sat back last before coming to the outside of said winner, he was then left for dead before picking up and hitting the line 12.40 (winner 12.20 - eased down).

CAPTIVANT was also back just off winner, he to was left behind, he too ran home 12.40. FOUR MOVES AHEAD was first home from those nearer the speed but beaten 7L. QUEEN OF WIZARDRY was another left standing but she was picking up nicely very late, her last 200m was 12.54 and she looks like 1600m will really suit her… She will be hoping ANAMOE doesn’t accept… She was still 7.1L off him on the line. Time: 1-24.69 was .5L above G1/2YO average and +5.3L Vs all averages.

The Group 1 ATC Derby was Race 7 and EXPLOSIVE JACK came from off midfield outside, his rider John Allen was patient and waited whilst others made early moves, he straightened-up 2-3L off runner-up YOUNG WERTHER (who went earlier - Tommy does like to do this) and ran him down.

LION’S ROAR was back just off said winner then gets up inside him, they actually straightened virtually together, he ran home hard but was just no match for the quinella but there was just .3L over them and they had 2.1L on the filly MONTEFILIA on the wire, she did come through along the inside rail before edging away, have to say it’s very difficult to draw the conclusion it cost her the win but I suspect she should have finished a bit closer.

Winner was race-fastest home with 11.9 with runner-up running 11.96. Lion’s Roar 12-flat. KHOEKHOE was home in 5th after having rails trail on a much softer tempo than the one he faced in Rosehill Guineas but again, he just found a few better, simple! Early tempo here was -5.2L Vs G1/3YO average. Winner ran 35.24 last 600m (+2L Vs class ave). Thought FAVREAU ran very well also after making a very early move, he still managed a 12.40 last 200m after sustaining a long, wide run. Overall time: 2-34.13 was -3.2L Vs G1/3yo class but +5.8L Vs all averages.

The Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes was Race 8 and NATURE STRIP was able to control the race (did we ever think we would be saying that ??). He sat up second eyeing-off leader EDUARDO who went 35.38 1st-600m. That figure had them 4.9L below G1 average (doubt anyone saw that coming either) so leader had his chance, I just think the 1200m at the elite level is the upper limit of his endurance, in saying that, he ran well (2.8L 3rd) and beat 4th easily.

The winner NATURE STRIP has produced a big last 600m (34.6) and run 1-10.09 overall on (now) Soft-6 track. So, despite the modest tempo (by G1 elite standards) he has still run +1.2L Vs G1 class ave and +12.6L Vs all averages. MASKED CRUSADER was a bit tardy and back 2nd-last on turn, he squeezed through tight gap (rider did not want the rail - the right move by now, race 8) and he did what he has done every run this prep.

He exploded to the line! Winner was eased a bit but he made up 4L (ish) over that last 200m, in fact his 11.74 home was the fastest in the race by a whopping .36 (ZOUTORI ran 12.10) and was second-fastest of any horse all day. ZOUTORI had similar task to said runner-up, he did run home well but was 6L off winner. BIVOUAC the disappointment.

The Group 1 Doncaster Mile was Race 9 and CASCADIAN continued his outstanding form this prep, and with J.Kah taking over, found the gaps and drove late to score. He (again) recorded one of the day’s fastest last 200m splits (11.80) this time at the end of a strongly-run 1600m race. Roughie OLMEDO led them +2.1L Vs G1 class average 1st-600m and ran 60.22 1st-1000m. Winner ran home 35.04 (-.8L Vs G1) and ran 1-36.36 overall time (+1.3L Vs G1 ave - +12.7L Vs all averages). Runner-up ICEBATH was near the winner mid race, saved ground then shot through (but was off inside rial) then nutted, he ran 11.89 last 200m and had 2.5kg from winner.

DALASAN had a similar run, off pace inside and although winner went by him quite easily, he kept battling manfully and was only beaten 1L. MUGATOO was perfectly ridden, he was with the trifecta then secured dream run through before looking the winner 200m out, he could only manage a 12.15 home (8th-fastest) with 56kg.

AVILIUS was behind the winner, and sound, but no match. Liked the run of ZAAKI from back/ wide (drew 19) then rider went in-between runners, he made very nice ground (11.80 last 200m was equal race-fastest with winner). There is a good race in this horse. FORBIDDEN LOVE had perfect trail and looks big hope 300m out but was no match for run-ons late sitting closer to that speed at 1600m. MO’UNGA was good for further (yep, he didn’t quicken!! Ran 11.96 home).
Avilius

Race 4 was Adrian Knox for 3yoF at 2000m. DUAIS was aided by a perfect Bowman ride from off (good) pace inside, quickly off rail and joining in then holding off big finish of BARGAIN who was restrained to tail from horror gate, she was forced widest then ran home clear race-fastest her last 2 x 200m splits, her 11.76 last 200m was .24 faster than next best (winner - 12-flat) with FLEXIBLE a solid third (had similar task to winner though), she ran 12.04 home. STAR POINT was a sound 4th but had no excuses, first three were simply better. SIGNORA NERA ran very well and made forgive file. Tempo was strong here: First-section +1.7L Vs class ave. Overall time: 2-06.32 was +3.9L Vs class. Race has rated well.

The Carbine Club was Race 2 for 3yo’s and all honours winner here: KIKU sat back/ wide and never had a cart into the race at any stage yet sustained the run to sail by THE IRISHMAN who had tracked the leader (chased good speed - +2.4L Vs G3 3yo ave), he beat third OK, that third horse was POLAND who ran home well ridden colder but certainly had his chance to get by runner-up if good enough. HIGH SUPREMACY was the hard-luck tale (see forgive file). 1st-1000m here was 60.64 (.42 slower than G1 Doncaster) with overall time -1.6L Vs G3 3yo average, they ran 1-37.89

THE FORGIVE FILE:?

  • BAHAMA (wide)
  • HIGH SUPREMACY (held-up badly 200m/ race goes by/ hit line hard!)
  • ACHIEVER (wide run)
  • ANOTHER ONE (wide run costly)
  • BAILEYS (bad check)

SATURDAY RACING REVIEW

Racing was at CAULFIELD on Saturday on GOOD-4 to GOOD-3 track. Rail was 6m. Run-on horses had a very good day, it was tough to lead (wind may well have been a factor) and those hard on inside rail were disadvantaged, fancy this become more evident as the day wore on also.

In Sydney it was ROSEHILL on GOOD-4 track. Rail was 6m. Alas there was a savage inside bias, this was evident early on, in fact, the first four races were quinellaed by the leader and the horse with the rails trail. Of the 9 races on the day, every winner led or drew gate 1 except for Hungry Heart who swooped from the back off a suicidal tempo, the leader (who ran second !!) ran over 1L above G1 average for first section. So, obviously bitterly disappointing on such a feature day (especially given previous meetings the track had played well, and even at the previous 6m spot you could run-on if good enough)… Oh well, always learning!

Run Of The Day

HUNGRY HEART attracted 42% of the vote with punters clearly identifying her win against the dynamite track bias.

SIR DRAGONET was not far off her though with 35% of the vote, MR QUICKIE 16% and HANG MAN (7%) rounded out the top-four. Thanks for voting ! Join the fun each week on twitter at handle @gatorgately

Rosehill Racing Review

The Group 1 Vinery for 3YO fillies was Race 6 and the pattern was well established by now, hence, leader HARMONY ROSE was heavily backed. She went straight to the front and, as referenced, went a staggering +12.1L 1st-600m Vs G1 3yoF average, her first 1400ms was run in 1-24.56.

Let’s line that up with the 3yo males in Tulloch Stks, the leader/ winner YALETOWN went 1-28.24, so, had the races been run together, HARMONY ROSE would have been roughly 22L in front of Yaletown with 600m to run! She was still well clear straightening up but was run down late by HUNGRY HEART with near 3L back to third (IMPECUNIOUS - was back with winner - she had good run through (winner forced wider) and ran well but was clearly inferior.

PRINCESS RHAENYS was sound and stuck to her task after that third filly sailed by her. HUNGRY HEART was (obviously) fastest filly home for final 2 x 200m splits but they were all paddling late off that fearsome speed. Winner 12.56 home, Impecunious 12.68, Princess Rhaenys 12.92. All other on-pace runners were beaten 9L or more… Time: 2-02.06 and do feel they were entitled to run faster given the speed.

That Tulloch Stakes was 3yo Males also 2000m as referenced and YALETOWN led (-4.2L Vs class ave 1st-600m) then got away, then held on running 2-03.74. I mentioned that first 1400m 1-28.24. Winner only needed a 12.32 home to hold off PROMPT PRODIY (12.12 home) who had the rails trail and looked flat as hell straightening but with the travelator on-side he did get into second spot from YOUNG WERTHER who kept closing (12.16 home) despite making ground to the outside well before the home turn, good effort. FAVREAU had 1-1 trail and never stopped trying.

CHERRY TORTONI ran home 12.02 out in middle of the track in inferior going, this split was bettered only by ZAKSPEED (11.94) who made nice ground but was nearer those inside lanes. JUST A JEDI also ran on (12.04) and there was 2.3L over these seven 3yo’s. This race HAS been the guide to the Derby in recent years but this form looks suspect to my eye.

Back to Race 7 and the other Group 1, The Tancred Stakes 2400m. SIR DRAGONET was dominant, simple! Yes he drew gate 1 and travelled 5th inside before edging off rail and quickly taking over, rider was soft on him late and he had 2.3L up his sleeve on the line from SHE’S IDEEL who is absolutely airborne, she rushed home from off midfield after also travelling on rail.

MIAMI BOUND has to be about the hardest horse to follow in this country! Looks like Phar Lap one day and legless the next, this was a ‘’good day’’ and she attacked the line running race-fastest 12-flat last 200m. TOFFEE TONGUE was 4th but she had the covered rails trail so no excuses. SPIRIT RIDGE held 5th after leading, he ran along at a solid (+1.9L Vs G1 ave) tempo and measured up OK to WFA. Winner ran 2:28.78 on dry ground which was bang-on G1 average. Liked the run of SOUTHERN FRANCE from Sydney Cup viewpoint here (forced wide/ kept coming/ 4th-fastest home in worst ground).

Race 8 was Doncaster Prelude and there looked serious speed on paper, even before nasty bias was established but it was YAO DASH heading straight to the front and scaring the others off, he did not crawl by any stretch of the imagination though! He went +5.6L Vs G3 average 1st-600m and ran 53.05 1st-900m, but just kept running (yes, savage bias on-side).

He was 3.5L clear on the wire and stopped the clock 1-28.34 which was +3.4L Vs G3 average and a whopping +13.1L Vs all averages). MISTER SEA WOLF ran on well from midfield easing to outside and recorded 12.12 last 200m, this was an identical split to ROCK who has made very good ground but was 100/1 on this track, on this day. BOTTEGA had good run just off them and was solid. SO SI BON had rails trail so…. GREY LION’s last 100m was lovely work even it was fast-run 1500m, on biased track, his 12.14 was actually 3rd-fastest of race.

Race 5 was Star Kingdom Stks (G3) at 1200m and SIGNORE FOX landed good bets (had trialled well / had gate 1 !!) and travelled 6th rail before edging off 300m out and finishing over WISDOM OF WATER who settled outside the leader PRIME CANDIDATE and they went 35.54 1st-600m (-1.6L Vs class ave), Wisdom Of Water held second from ROHERYN who settled behind the winner, he didn’t quicken like said winner (6th-fastest 400m-to-200m) but liked his last 100m, note: his last 200m was 11.44 which was 3rd-fastest all day, 2nd-fastest was DEPRIVE who was steaming to the line despite having no clear room, he looks like he is back!!  CALIFORNIA ZIMBOL had 1-1 trail and gave her all with 55.5kg against the boys. Time: 1-9.99 was .4L under G3 average.

Race 4 saw NIMALEE with the rails trail overhaul the leader GREYSFUL GLAMOUR who had rolled along +1.1L Vs class average, her 1st-900m was 54.23 so a good 7L slower than Yao Dash later in day over same trip. Winner ran 1-28.99 which was +2.5L Vs G2 F&M Ave. QUANTUM MECHANIC was home hard (11.64 race-fastest) Vs bias. ICEBATH home 11.74 keeps racing well, any rain does help her. Plenty made Forgive File here.
